Q. Why do we need to justify address space?
A. IP Version 4 address space is in short supply and the continued supply of address space is only possible through careful self-regulation by the Internet community. SES NEW SKIES, like all other responsible ISPs, takes IP address justification and allocation seriously and adheres to common best practices.
Q. What size blocks need justifying?
A. Any block other than the /30 which is used to connect you to SES NEW SKIES.
Q. We never had to justify before, why now?
A. SES NEW SKIES have recently tightened the justification and allocation process to reflect the more strict policies imposed by Regional Internet Registries.
Q. Why ARIN/RIPE/APNIC? Can we specify?
A. There are three Regional Internet Registries:
• ARIN for North America, South America and Canada
• RIPE for Europe, Middle East and Africa
• APNIC for Asia Pacific
SES NEW SKIES use ARIN address space for all services originating from US based teleports and RIPE address space for all services originating from UK based teleports and APNIC address space for services originating from Hong Kong.
The actual location of the service is irrelevant, so if you take service in Indonesia on the SE Asia DVB platform out of the UK, then you will use RIPE space, not ARIN.
Q. How many addresses are we allowed?
A. You are allowed as many addresses as you need, providing that the request is adequately justified. The number of addresses is not related to the amount of bandwidth you take from SES NEW SKIES or any commercial relationship. It is based on the nature of your network and how many addresses it requires to make it operate correctly. However, each request will be assessed on its own merits, but as a general rule, if you are requesting address blocks larger than /22 (1024 addresses) we may advise you approach the relevant RIR (Regional Internet Registry) directly.
Q. Where can we find out more information and how do we apply?
A. There are a number of information resources on the SES NEW SKIES website.
Go to IPsys Resources. There you will find a number of documents, including the IP address request form (which you can also access directly via http://www.newskies.net/iprequest ) and also the guidelines on how to complete the form.
Q. How long does the justification and allocation process take?
A. The justification process takes up to three working days from when you file the application to when we allocate address space. The process may be extended if we need to contact you to clarify any details, so please try and provide all the information correctly the first time. Requests for more than a /24 may take longer as SES NEW SKIES may need to consult with the appropriate RIR before approving the assignment. On average this will add 10-15 working days to the process. So remember, please submit large requests in as early as possible.
Q. What happens at the end of our lease?
A. At the end of the lease you will required to return all address space allocated to you by SES NEW SKIES.
Q. How much do addresses cost?
A. Allocation of address space is currently free to SES NEW SKIES customers. Although for excessive numbers of requests SES NEW SKIES may impose a small administrative fee.
Q. Can we announce the address space to other ISPs?
A. If you are running BGP you can announce the address space we allocate to you to other ISPs. Other ISPs may not originate the address space from within their own network. Most ISPs will not accept BGP announcements of any block more specific than /24.
Q. Can we apply directly to ARIN/RIPE/APNIC for address space?
A. If you wish you can apply for your own address space from your regional RIR: ARIN, RIPE or APNIC. You will need to become an LIR (Local Internet Registry) and the RIRs make a charge for this.
Q. Do I need to do a separate justification for each of my sites?
A. Yes. Each site that requires address space allocating to it requires a separate justification.
Q. Should I use private addressing instead of public addressing?
A. Private addressing is usually used in conjunction with NAT (Network Address Translation) when connecting to the Internet. NAT can be performed by most routers and will enable users to connect to the Internet as normal, whilst reducing the amount of addresses required. All SES NEW SKIES customers should consider private addressing when requesting address space. For a detailed explanation please see http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1918.html
Q. Where can I find out more about allocation?.
A. If you have any questions about our policies on address allocation and justification then please E-mail the IP Request Team at iprequest@ses-newskies.com.
